Biography

I came to SVSU in 2002, after earning a B.A. in Psychology at Albion College and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota. This was a homecoming for me, as I grew up in Midland.

My passion is student development, whether that involves students in my classes, advisees who come to me for career guidance, or students who I will never meet, but my teacher education students will eventually have in their classes. As well as having taught students at Saginaw Valley State University for over 20 years, I am also spearheading the psychology department’s Career-Readiness Initiative. This involves developing internships, workshops, and materials to prepare our students for their next steps.

Education

Doctor of Philosophy
Univ of Minnesota-Minneapolis

Teaching Interests

Educational Psychology and Child/Adolescent Psychology

Research

My research interests encompass the areas of developmental, cognitive, and educational psychology. Generally, my research explores the complex mental processes involved in producing and comprehending language as well as how this knowledge can be applied effectively to educational settings. I am starting a line of research looking at young children’s media use and how they understand what they are exposed to on screens. Students in my lab have been authors of presentations at regional, national, and international conferences. Please contact me to talk more about opportunities.

Community Engagement

As the coordinator of the Psychology Department's internship course, I maintain partnerships with dozens of community organizations. I am proud that our students not only gain valuable professional development skills through their internships, but also contribute significantly to their community.

I also organize career-related workshops for the department. We invite alumni and other community members to talk with our students about life after graduation. These workshops expose students to different psychology-related career fields and graduate programs.

Leadership

I am currently the chair of the Psychology Department.  I am also the coordinator of our career initiative.
