Dr. Julie Foss is a Professor of Modern Foreign Languages, teaching French language, French and Francophone cultures, and world language pedagogy. After earning a B.A. in French from Albion College and secondary teaching certification in French from Eastern Michigan University, she earned an M.A. in French from EMU and a Ph.D. in French Language and Literature from Michigan State University. Her scholarly interests include second language acquisition and pedagogy, particularly proficiency-oriented approaches to language teaching, and her talks at state, regional, and national conferences focus on related topics. She is co-author of the high-school curriculum French/German/Spanish for Careers currently in use in the Oakland Schools ISD.
Foss served on the Michigan Department of Education Seal of Biliteracy Council that created the policy allowing Michigan high schools to award the Seal of Biliteracy credential to graduates who have demonstrated language proficiency in English and at least one other world language, as well as on the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy Workgroup that supports the state's biliteracy seal program. She led efforts at SVSU to use the Seal for placement into language classes and to recognize the language skills of Department of Modern Foreign Languages majors and minors with a similar credential, the Global Seal of Biliteracy.
