Biography
George Corser is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU). His research examines theoretical capabilities of location privacy in Internet of Things (IoT) and vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) contexts. His teaching explores computer programming concepts in web and mobile app development, as well as fundamentals of cyber security, and cyber crime. His professional service includes advisory positions in a federal cybercrime analysis consortium and several international technical societies.
Research: Corser is an award-nominated and award-winning researcher. He won two awards for papers published in ACM InfoSecCD 2012. His February 2016 journal paper in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (impact factor: 3.0) was nominated for the 2016 Caspar Bowden PET Award, and his doctoral dissertation was nominated for an Oakland University (OU) 2015 Outstanding Dissertation Award. He was awarded two SVSU grants for vehicle network research in the 2014-15 academic year, which led to an SVSU undergraduate co-authored IEEE conference paper. He led two teams under an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant in vehicle network research, leading to 2 IEEE conference paper publications and one journal paper with 4 OU undergraduate co-authors. His research led to invitations by Intel to participate on the Automotive Security Review Board (ASRB) car dashboard hacking investigations and to serve as a featured speaker at IEEE End to End Trust and Security Workshop for the Internet of Things in Washington, D.C.
Teaching: Corser instructs students and develops original materials for web/mobile programming and cybersecurity courses, including in-person, online, undergraduate and graduate courses. Corser is a productive teacher, teaching 32 to 40 credits per year (8 to 10 four-credit courses per year). He has also produced hundreds of YouTube videos on multiple YouTube channels on computer-related topics. He utilizes video tools, YouTube Creator Studio (now YouTube Studio), Playlists, Camtasia, Echo360 and LightBoard. Corser was granted a Herbert H and Grace Dow Professor Award for research in collaborative computer science education. He has also assisted SVSU in preparing teachers for Fall 2020 in-person classes that will also simulcast online using MS Teams to enable effective teaching duirng Covid19 coronavirus restrictions.
Service: Corser provides service to local, national and international communities. He actively promotes computer science education throughout SVSU and its surrounding community, leading Hour of Code events, serving as a Dow Corning faculty mentor and an AH Nickless mentor, and helping campus organizations develop web sites and mobile apps. He is the only SVSU faculty who has ever served as Organizer of TEDxSVSU events, and faculty advisor of the student organization which coordinates TED Talks on SVSU campus. He served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of Early Career Academy, a Michigan charter public high school. He is a member of the ACM, SAE, IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, and he serves as a resource on the topic of digital security in the transportation sector for the Michigan Infragard, a cyber security partnership between the FBI and the private sector.
Academic Credentials: Corser holds a doctorate (PhD) in Computer Science and Informatics from Oakland University, a Master of Science (MS) in Computer and Information Systems from the University of Michigan-Flint, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) in Civil Engineering from Princeton University.
